IIT| How to Settlement &Claim Your Individual Income Tax Refund in China

It’s that time of year again—individual income tax settlement season in China for individuals who are Chinese resident in tax purpose. If you’ve paid more tax than necessary through monthly withholdings, you may be eligible for a refund.

Wondering how to settle your tax and get money back? The process is fairly straightforward—especially if you already have a registered account got from the local tax authority.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Download the Official App

Start by downloading the “Personal Income Tax” app (個人所得稅APP) from your mobile phone.

Step 2: Review and Update Your Deductions

Before filing, double-check your deduction information in the app.Make sure everything is accurate and up to date—this can directly affect your refund amount.

Step 3: File Your Tax Settlement

You can file your annual settlement anytime between March 1 and June 30, 2026.

Step 4: Provide Your Bank Details (If You’re Due a Refund)

If the system shows you’re eligible for a refund, you’ll need to enter your bank account information. Once submitted, all you need to do is wait.

Make sure it’s an active  bank account in your own nameEspecially your name order which should keep 100% same with your tax filing name, otherwise, the transfer may fail.

What if you can't access the APP?

If you haven’t registered for the app account at the tax hall—or are unable to access it for any reason—you can visit your local tax hall in person. Bring:

  • Your personal identification document(Passport)

  • Your bank account information (same requirements as above)

  • Other documents which can be got at the tax hall

What if I can't visit the tax hall?

The company may assist if it already handle your monthly IIT filings.

That said, it’s entirely up to the company’s policy. So don’t rely on it—better to handle it yourself through the app or tax hall as IIT tax settlement is a personal obligation, not the employer’s responsibility.
